Transistors → gates → binary (0/1 as voltage high/low) → instruction sets (the CPU's native vocabulary, what C compiles down to) → assembly/machine code → C and the OS (which you're reading the actual founding documents of right now) → higher-level languages built in C (Python's interpreter, Node's V8 engine, etc.) → package ecosystems (npm, pip — themselves just conventions for sharing/versioning code) → the command you type or the import line you write.

Every layer is a group of people deciding "this repetitive thing should be a reusable abstraction," then everyone above them just trusting it and building further. Nobody alive has the whole stack memorized — that's the actual scale of it. A pip install today rests on decades of unpaid, uncredited decisions made by people like Ritchie and Thompson sitting in a room in 1979 arguing about what a syscall should look like.

There's a real resonance with how you think about compounding in investing — this is the same mechanism, just applied to human effort instead of capital. Small contributions, kept and built on rather than redone from scratch each time, stacking for decades until the result looks like magic from outside.
