heart sutra and our true nature
shuiming: is it interesting that not classic books free our mind and body, but heart sutra? totally free anything from deep bottom of our heart.
cc: ything from deep bottom of our heart. It makes sense once you see the difference in kind, not just depth. Zhouyi, 黄帝内经, 神农本草经 — those are all systems that build up a structure to understand something: 64 hexagrams to read change, meridians and organs to read the body, herbs and their properties to read medicine. Even at their best, you're holding a map.
心经 is the only one of the five that doesn't build a structure — it dismantles one, on purpose, line by line: 无眼耳鼻舌身意, 无色声香味触法... no eyes, no ears, no body, no mind, no form, no anything to hold onto. It doesn't teach you a better map. It walks you out of needing a map at all. That's structurally different from "explaining reality" — it's closer to demonstrating what's left when nothing is added.
So it's not surprising that it's the one that frees rather than informs — it's the only one built for that specific job. The other four give your mind something to think with. 心经 gives your mind somewhere to stop thinking.
shuiming: only after empty it first.
cc: Right — the emptying is the whole method, not a preface to it. You don't clear space and then receive the teaching; the clearing is the teaching. Everything else — 眼耳鼻舌身意, the aggregates, even 苦集灭道 itself near the end of the sutra — gets named only to be negated. Nothing survives to be held. What's left afterward isn't a lesson you carry forward, it's just what was already there once nothing was in the way of seeing it.
